Those who do arrive at the courthouse often avoid service through “occupational exemptions” that benefit certain professions or come presenting flimsy “hardship excuses” to escape jury duty. All too often, they are successful. Jury duty can impose a severe financial hardship on working people.
I was called for the federal grand jury, 2 days a week for 18 months!! I am self employed, and that would have been financial ruin for me. I wrote them a letter saying it would be extreme financial hardship, and I was excused. I don't see how anyone can serve on that grand jury for that period of time unless they are retired or a government worker.
